University's sea science expert wins top award

A WORLD-leading University of Derby academic has won a national education award, recognising his commitment to mentoring the next generation of marine scientists.

Professor Michael Sweet, who heads the university's aquatic research facility, scooped the title of outstanding research Supervisor of the Year’ at the ‘Oscars of higher education’ - the Times Higher Education Awards.
Since joining the university in 2013, Prof Sweet has not only successfully supervised nine PhD and three MPhil students, he has also led pioneering techniques into coral spawning - paving the way for coral reef restoration around the world.
Many of his former students now lead major initiatives in conservation, consultancy, research and aquaria worldwide.
