Disabled girl, 9, can get to class again after council U-turn on transport bar

A DISABLED girl who couldn't go to classes after a council scrapped her school bus place was back yesterday after a U-turn.

The Record revealed how the parents of Jessica McMillan, who battles a life-limiting condition, were left shattered to be told she was being refused a place on her school bus for the first time in five years.

The youngster became the face of a Daily Record campaign when she was just a baby after her life was saved by stem cells taken from the umbilical cord of another child.

The nine-year-old, from Galston, Ayrshire, overcame health battles after being diagnosed with MPS1, also known as Hurler syndrome, and was attending Willowbank, a specialist primary four miles away in Kilmarnock.

The decision to deny her transport, branded “heartless” by their local MSP, meant mum Kathleen was facing having to give up her job as dad Sammy recovers from a stroke.

But Jessica is now back at school after missing more than two weeks of the start of term as the council reconsidered their application. Sammy, 49, said:
