MARLON RECALLS HIGHS AND LOWS OF EPIC FA CUP CLASH
ALL goalkeepers experience joyful highs and painful lows but Marlon Beresford went through both in one epic night.
The match is part of FA Cup legend Luton 3, Liverpool 5 in the third round at a packed Kenilworth Road on January 7, 2006 a night that famously ended with Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso scoring from 65 yards. The memories come flooding back for Beresford as the Hatters prepare to host the Reds in the Premier League tomorrow.
Liverpool were European champions after their great escape in Istanbul, while Luton had been promoted to the Championship. Now Liverpool, fourth in the Premier League after just one defeat, meet a Luton side battling to survive with one win on their top-flight return.
Beresford, now 54, said: The odds are stacked against Luton, just like they were in 2006. But we gave them a game.”
