HOW ‘TECHNO-STRAIN’ - CONSTANT CONNECTIVITY TO DEVICES - IS AFFECTING YOUR HEALTH AND WHY TAKING A BREAK FROM THE SCREEN COULD MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
-

The term ‘techno-strain’ could easily have been plucked straight from the pages of a 1960s science fiction novel. But, despite its futuristic ring, it’s a problem that’s impacting countless people today - and there’s a chance you are one of them.

A study by Canada Life has highlighted just how widespread this particular issue is. More than half (51%) of UK employees report working beyond their contracted hours every day, with almost one-fifth (17%) putting in at least two hours of overtime daily. Perhaps more worryingly, the same study found that two-thirds (68%) of UK workers continue to work even when feeling unwell.
According to the University of Nottingham’s research, techno-strain can contribute to feelings of overload, anxiety, and a persistent fear of missing out, leaving workers unable to disconnect and step away from their tasks. This constant digital engagement not only affects mental well-being, but can also lead to significant physical issues.
Furthermore, studies suggest that the rise of remote work is exacerbating the problem. Working from home not only promotes a more sedentary lifestyle, but can also blur the lines between work and personal life, making it increasingly difficult to set clear boundaries and manage time effectively.
As a result, experts are warning that techno-strain could have far-reaching consequences affecting both short-term well-being and long-term health.
