Makhana or fox nuts are generally referred to as lotus seeds but they are actually the dried seeds of the Euryale ferox plant also called as Prickly Water Lily. The aquatic crop Euryale ferox, is a member of the Nymphaeaceae family. It has large floating leaves that produce bright purple flowers on the surface of the pond. The popped seeds of this plant are Makhana.

It is mostly seen in nations of South and East Asia, including India, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Japan, Russia, Korea, and others. Its cultivation in India is restricted to a few states, including Bihar, Assam, Manipur, and West Odisha, Tripura, and Bengal.

What are its local names?

Makhana is called as Phool makhana in Hindi. Popped Lotus Seeds, Popped Water Lily Seeds, Gorgon nut or fox nut in English
