How to Keep Your Eyes Healthy When You Have Diabetes

Living with diabetes means paying special attention not only to your blood sugar but also to your eyes.
However, the good news is that with regular care and smart lifestyle habits, you can protect your eyesight for years to come.
1. Control Your Blood Sugar Levels: High blood sugar is the biggest threat to your eyes. When glucose levels stay high, it damages tiny blood vessels in the retina, leading to leakage and swelling.
- Keep your HbA1c below 7% (as advised by your doctor).
- Monitor your blood sugar regularly.
- Follow a balanced diet rich in fiber, whole grains, vegetables, and lean proteins.
- Avoid refined sugars and processed foods that cause spikes in blood glucose.
2. Manage Blood Pressure and Cholesterol: Diabetes often goes hand-in-hand with high blood pressure and high cholesterol, both of which can worsen eye disease.
- Aim for BP below 130/80 mmHg and maintain healthy lipid levels.
- Reduce salt intake, limit red meat and fried foods, and exercise daily.
