Bulging Aorta: What You Need to Know About Aortic Aneurysms

|

June 2025

An aortic aneurysm, often referred to as a “bulging aorta,” is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when a section of the aorta — the largest artery in the body — becomes weakened and balloons outward. While it may develop silently without noticeable symptoms, the consequences of a ruptured aneurysm can be catastrophic.

Bulging Aorta: What You Need to Know About Aortic Aneurysms

What Is an Aortic Aneurysm?

An aortic aneurysm is a localized enlargement or bulge in the wall of the aorta. The aorta carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body. When a section of this artery weakens, it may begin to expand outward, forming an aneurysm. Aneurysms can occur in different parts of the aorta, most commonly in the:

  • Abdominal Aorta (Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm - AAA): Occurs in the portion of the aorta that passes through the abdomen.

  • Thoracic Aorta (Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm - TAA): Occurs in the chest region.

Some people may even develop thoracoabdominal aneurysms, which affect both regions.

What Causes an Aortic Aneurysm?

Several factors can contribute to the weakening of the aortic wall:

  • Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Genetic conditions such as Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

  • Smoking - a major risk factor
