3-6-9 YOUR WAY TO LOVE
Femina
|April - May 2025
Whether you're a certified situationship survivor or just dipping your toes into something new, the 3-6-9 rule has your back when it comes to figuring out if it’s worth the emotional investment — all before the group chat stages an intervention
How many times have you sat down with your girlfriends over Sunday brunch, mimosas in hand, gushing about the guy you just met online?
“He's so nice. He sends me good morning texts and is looking for something serious — it’s like he’s made for me!”
Fast forward a month, and you're back at brunch but, this time, instead of swooning, you're venting about how the universe is clearly playing a cruel joke, sending you yet another ‘lesson’ wrapped in a man-shaped package. Sound familiar? You're not alone!
What if there were a way to save yourself from that emotional rollercoaster?
While we can’t hand you a crystal ball, we do have something almost as good: a straightforward little framework that helps decode if your love story is headed for rom-com status or reality TV drama. Enter: the 3-6-9 rule of dating - a built-in timeline for your relationship, breaking down what typically unfolds at the three-, six-, and nine-month marks.
THE HONEYMOON HIGH: 0 TO 3 MONTHS
This is the phase we all know, love, and can't get enough of. You're bonding over shared quirks, binge-watching the same shows, texting like there’s no tomorrow, and maybe even planning cute weekend getaways. It’s all butterflies, endless conversations, and, if you're ready, some between-the-sheets magic.
Essentially, you're figuring out if this person truly makes your heart skip a beat. But here’s where things get interesting. According to Delhi-based relationships counsellor Ruchi Ruuh, this is also when reality starts to peek through. “As the honeymoon phase begins to fade, you start noticing subtle differences in habits, values and communication styles. It’s the first time couples face small misunderstandings,” she explains. The trick? Enjoy the thrill but pay attention to how they navigate disagreements and ask yourself: beyond the initial spark, is there something real brewing here?
