A pivotal moment
Indian Management
|July 2025
The business world is experiencing a seismic shift as flexible employment and the gig economy redefine the very fabric of work, thrusting organisations and regulatory authorities into uncharted territory.
Fuelled by rapid technological leaps, shifting workforce expectations, and global economic currents, this transformation is dismantling traditional employment models and ushering in a dynamic era of autonomy, adaptability, and uncertainty. Companies are now grappling with the challenge of managing a decentralised, diverse workforce—freelancers, gig workers, and remote teams; while navigating the complexities of fluctuating productivity, talent retention, and compliance. Regulatory authorities, meanwhile, face a daunting task: crafting laws that balance innovation with protection, as outdated frameworks struggle to address job insecurity, benefit gaps, and the rise of platform-based power dynamics. This evolving landscape demands bold, creative solutions, forcing businesses to rethink strategies and regulators to pioneer new policies that embrace the opportunities while tackling the risks of this bold new world of work.
The shift to flexible employment and the gig economy
Industrial relations, traditionally built around stable, long-term employment relationships, are changing faster than ever due to the rise of flexible employment and the gig economy. Flexible employment encompasses a range of work arrangements, including part-time, temporary, remote, and freelance work, often facilitated by digital platforms. The gig economy, a subset of this trend, is characterised by short-term contracts and project-based tasks, as opposed to permanent jobs. This transformation is driven by technological advancements, globalisation, and changing workforce preferences, fundamentally altering the employer-employee dynamic.
