Sustainability in Hospitality

Vishal Puri, Co-Founder, Spalba, on the need for innovation and action.

As global travel and events rebounded in 2024, the hospitality industry faced a dual challenge: Meeting growing demand while aligning with sustainability goals. The sector contributes to approximately 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with energy consumption, waste, and transportation being primary drivers.
In India, where the hospitality market is projected to reach $475 billion by 2029, sustainability has become an essential focus for both guests and businesses. However, achieving sustainability goals requires more than intent - it demands a strategic blend of technology, operational efficiency, and innovative practices.
1. Why Sustainability is Now Non-Negotiable
Sustainability has transitioned from a “nice-to-have” to a “must-have” in the hospitality sector. Travellers are increasingly prioritizing eco-friendly choices, with 81% of global travellers indicating they seek sustainable options, according to a Booking.com report.
Moreover, corporate clients now expect venues to align with their ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals, making sustainability a key differentiator in competitive markets. For the hospitality industry, this translates into adopting resource-efficient practices, reducing emissions, and minimizing waste.
