Musician Vusi Nova and actor Sisa Hewana share the same father, but you wouldn’t know that, because the two are quite private about their personal life. Sisa burst onto our screens in 2010 as womaniser Skhumbuzo Nzimande on Isidingo, after winning a nationwide talent search. Eastern Cape’s greatest export, Vusi, made a name for himself following his rendition of Etta James’ I’d Rather Go Blind.

“Vusi grew up with his mother, while I stayed with my dad’s family,” says Sisa. “But he and I were always together. We don’t have the same mother, but we knew from the onset that we were brothers. We have an older sister. I think the public is surprised to know that Vusi and I are related, because we’re very private about our lives – there are certain things that I keep to myself. I’m now a father, too – I have two kids, ages seven and nine,” says Sisa.

Vusi adds that growing up, they were not made to feel different. “Most people think that my mother was also Sisa’s mom, because that’s the role that she played in his life. His mother was in Durban, while we all remained in Port Elizabeth. Our father and Sisa’s mother are both doctors – they studied in Durban, which is where they met.”

The singer continues: “Dad got a job back home, but Sisa’s mother remained in Durban. He built a whole new life in PE; my mother only found out that he was married and had another child almost the same age as me at his funeral! Sisa and I love each other so much – there’s no such thing as ‘that’s your mother’ or ‘that’s not my sister’. When I’m in trouble, I can call him anytime, and vice versa.”
