Since joining Orlando Pirates from Mamelodi Sundowns in2017, Wayne Sandilands has not really established himself as the Buccaneers’ number one shot-stopper.
The 36-year-old has made a few errors here and there, but it can’t be denied that he has also put up some solid performances in a number of matches, particularly towards the end of last season when the Soweto giants were chasing the Absa Premiership title, only to be pipped at the post by his former club Sundowns. This season he has made a fairly good start between the sticks, but he has competition from French goalkeeper Joris Delle, who was recently given a few opportunities to shine by coach Rhulani Mokwena. In this interview, Sandilands chats to Soccer Laduma’s Tshepang Mailwane about their difficult start to the campaign and the fact that they cannot allow rivals Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs to open up a gap in the title race.
Tshepang Mailwane: What thrilling Soweto Derby games we have been treated to over the past two weekends, with plenty of action and goals! Do you think both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have shown that the Soweto Derby is still an entertaining game?
Wayne Sandilands: I don’t think there’s anyone who can talk about entertainment value. Both sides just want to go out there and give their all. There’s been some good football and some excitement for the supporters. The derby is always a special occasion and that’s the way it should be.
TM: Although you were on the losing side in both encounters, you put up a great fighting spirit, especially in the Telkom Knockout semi-final where you went one man down.
