It does not get bigger in Germanfootball than Bayern Munichagainst Borussia Dortmund, the game known as Der Klassiker. Another clash between the two German giants is upon us this weekend, when the Bavarians host the Black and Yellows at the Allianz Arena. Bayern find themselves in unknown territory after losing their last Bundesliga game 5-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt, which led to Niko Kovac’s departure from the club. Dortmund, meanwhile, will want to make up for their massive 5-0 loss the last time the sides met in Munich. Ahead of this weekend’s clash, Soccer Laduma chatted to BVB’s assistant coach and former UEFA Champions League winner Jörg Heinrich to discuss what makes these games so special.

Soccer Laduma: What is the difference between Der Klassiker and the Revierderby (between BVB and Schalke), and what makes each one special?
Jörg Heinrich: Bayern Munich and Schalke are two different teams, and the DNA of each club is completely different. Both clubs have a long tradition in the Bundesliga, and playing Schalke is maybe one level higher in terms of intensity. The fans push the team, so there’s a lot of intensity from the rivalry because it’s two clubs that are geographically very close to each other.
SL: Which club would fans hate to lose more to?
JH: (Laughs) You have to differentiate between the club itself and the fans. For the fans, it would be worse to lose the derby against Schalke. As a player, it’s different. For each game you get three points, so you want to win each game no matter what. But the fans, for them, it’s very important to win the local derby.
SL: How do you go about preparing for these big games? Is it any different to other league games?
