I think the best piece of advice I can give regarding solid bags as winter approaches, is definitely, 100%, include them within your approach. At this time of year, when the feeding desire of carp is generally lower, small, high-attract pockets of bait can form the perfect trap. Solid PVA bags achieve this presentation simply and effectively. What’s more, with your hookbaits concealed and somewhat protected within solid bags, you also remove a series of concerns when the layout of the lake bed is unknown. What I’m really talking about here is a couple of brilliant winter tactics – either roaming a rod by periodically casting to different areas of your swim or, in an ideal world, casting at showing fish. Leading about and potentially spooking fish isn’t really an option, and so you may not be entirely sure what you’re casting over – silt, gravel or light (dying?) weed. A solid PVA bag will leave you with a decent presentation in pretty much any of these scenarios. For that reason, a few packs of PVA bags are always in my kit, even though they may not be my number one set-up at other times of year.
