BEFORE you read this article, take out a minute to list down the five people closest to you? (Friends and family included). Now, remove the names of your family members. Why? Because our commitment to them is often a matter of obligation and not choice. For the purposes of this article, we will focus on the relationships you choose.

Now, answer these questions: 1. How many people do you have on your list?; 2. How many of them are your source of nourishment?; 3. Do they add value to your life: financially, emotionally, spiritually, or socially?; 4. How many of them would you call when you are emotionally down?; 5. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate the quality of your interactions with them?

A healthy relationship is such an integral component for optimal functioning, it was important to name it as a foundational pillar in the Balance Model. The world today is plagued with a pandemic called Covid 19. The truth is, a far deadlier pandemic has plagued us for much longer. The pandemic of loneliness. According to former surgeon general of the US, loneliness shortens a lifespan in a way similar to smoking fifteen cigarettes a day, and it increases your risk of mortality by 26 per cent. That’s even more than depression and anxiety.
