When entrusted with limited tools of a minimal colour and material palette to design a 3BHK apartment in Mumbai, D’ethos Architects rose to the challenge and surpassed it with artistic flourish.

Minimal Art

Founded in 2011, D’ethos Architects is a young Mumbai-based firm that specializes in architecture and interior design with a focus on a modern aesthetic and outlook, producing designs that are relevant, practical and client-oriented. Spearheaded by architect Samadhan Mhatre, the design practice’s latest marvel is a 3BHK apartment in Matunga, Mumbai for a client with whom the principal has previously worked with. The client had bought a new 2,400-squarefoot apartment in a newly built building and wanted Samadhan to create a contemporary space with minimal use of materials. The brief also included a lavish and spacious living area, a huge kitchen with an island counter/breakfast table and vibrant bedrooms for his teenage son and daughter with no storage components except for wardrobes.

Samadhan translated the simple brief into a space which epitomizes the idea of a modern first home. “We had to incorporate some existing components like the antique beige Italian marble flooring and bathroom fittings into the design. Our colour scheme and design language therefore stemmed from these materials. I came up with the idea of using grey to balance the colour palette (which turned out to be a hit with the client), and then we added some vibrant highlights,” explains Samadhan.
