One thing’s for sure: Sony makes an effort to fill its smaller games with clever ideas. Marrying blistering style and narrative substance isn’t an easy thing to do, but that doesn’t stop the big-console follow-up to the PS Vita’s most interesting title from aiming for the skies. Unfortunately it never manages to fly but, like its protagonist, it certainly demonstrates an impressive, cat-like nimbleness.
After an interesting reveal of series protagonist Kat, who has ended up in who-knows-where after the events of the first game, Gravity rush 2 quickly settles into a tried-and-tested groove: get powers back, learn new powers, overcome adversity, beat the bad guys.
The innovation and hooks can be found elsewhere in this title, though. There’s a potential-filled story here, which focuses on the war between a downtrodden underclass (that description is literal – their city is hidden below the bustling middle-class region) and the posh lads in their mansions high in the clouds. There are even missions that allow (very minor) moral choices, but despite the tension-fuelled setup, the narrative can feel a little slow.
Outside of the story, the main draw comes from Kat and the handy gravity-shifting powers she was gifted by her space-cat friend, Dusty. She’s a lovely character who exudes positivity – with a heavy hint of naivety. Despite being the hero, though, she’s annoyingly reserved, which means she’s treated poorly by the other characters and is constantly forced to do busywork.
