What happens when I’m ready to race at an IHRA-sanctioned dragstrip?

Now It's Time To Head Down Track

You’re sick of watching and want to have go. We can relate to that; it’s how most of us started racing. Maybe you’ve just had your bike tuned and want to see just how tough it really is. Whatever the reason, you’re not the first to get the itch.

One of the best parts of drag racing motorcycles is that the bike you have now is generally a great place to start. Unlike ride days at your local road racing circuit, you don’t need any special bike to get started.

Last issue we covered the basics about your bike and gear. This time around, we’re gonna share the basics of heading down the track for the first time. Every track is laid out differently as far as the position of the staging lanes and the turnoff for the return road but we’re looking at the basics of racing.

IN THE STAGING LANES

This is where you sit and wait to make a pass. Generally, the lanes are organised so that all of the bikes are lined up together in one lane. Pull up behind the last bike, take your helmet off and relax. If you can. Here is where the nerves kick in. That’s normal. Double-check that you’ve got your jacket, helmet and gloves ready to slip on.
