I must say, it was only in my adult years that I began enjoying my family. It took a while to understand the joys of having a mother as a best friend, a sister as a confidante, sister-in-laws as great companions, and nephews and nieces as bundles of joy and a reminder of the blissful years of innocence. But family doesn’t just include blood relations. I have seen families of lifelong friends, and families who have embraced people with none. This issue of ASIAN Geographic deals with many aspects of family, including weddings (p64), which symbolises the start of a new family, family values that have been personified in the Royal family of Thailand (p110) and the delightful families in the animal kingdom (p28, p32). We’ve also brought to light family issues in developing countries where NGOs strive for better pre- and postnatal care of women and children (p16) and the growing problem of homeless people (including families) in the highly developed nation of Japan (p42). This issue also commemorates Earth Day, as we continue to fight the good fight (p49). And speaking of a good fight, I must mention the Magazine Publishers Association of Singapore (MPAS) Awards that ASIAN Geographic has won (p ).
