The Dengue Dilemma
Dengue cases in the Philippines have nearly reached its 150,000 mark in 2015, with 600 reported deaths. Last April 2016, the Department of Health (DOH) launched the first Dengue Vaccination Program in the Philippines, targeting 1 million nine to 10-year-old school children. A total of 489,003 school children have been given the initial dose in regions NCR, III, and IV; and this number is still around 50 percent short of the 1-million target. Should we continue the immunization program and try to meet the planned target, or should we just complete the second and third doses for those who already received the initial dose? Should our legislators make the decision to continue it by holding “hostage” the 2017 DOH budget if the immunization program is not continued? Or should we listen more to what the experts say about the unresolved safety concerns of this vaccine?
In this issue, H&L tackles these concerns; bearing in mind the cardinal dictum in Medicine: “Primum non nocere” (First, do no harm).
