In this issue

The ABCs of Viral Hepatitis Coordinated by the World Hepatitis Alliance, World Hepatitis Day is observed annually every July 28, and it aims to raise global awareness on viral hepatitis, to encourage prevention, and promote early treatment. These national awareness campaigns on viral hepatitis have equipped the general public with a better understanding and knowledge on how to prevent getting the dreaded hepatitis viruses, particularly hepatitis B and C, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Despite these efforts, there is still some sort of a “yellow phobia,” a stigma affixed on those discovered to be carriers of the hepatitis virus. And quite unfortunately, more than the actual risk of hepatitis reactivation or progression to cirrhosis or liver cancer, the psychological impact of being identified as a carrier of the virus confers an emotionally traumatizing stigma on the identified inactive carriers. In this issue, H&L revisits the ABCs of viral hepatitis, hopefully to clear some misconceptions on the disease, and help erase the stigma on those who carry the virus.
