This fortnight’s cover story, ‘The Rising Star of Vaccines’, captures the efforts of Zydus Cadila to develop an indigenous DNA vaccine for Covid-19, the only one of its kind in India. Managing director Sharvil Patel hopes the vaccine will be available by March 2021, his optimism based on the fact that Zydus Cadila was only the third company in the world to bring an H1N1 vaccine to the market in less than 10 months to tackle the swine flu scourge a decade ago.
The other big package, ‘Local Champs’, looks at the emergence of a clutch of Indian manufacturing companies holding on their own after clashing with multinational giants in their respective sectors. The journeys of these companies narrate how they found better market opportunities by manufacturing in India.
