As we age, the risk of a urinary tract infection (UTI) increases due to weaker pelvic floor muscles and hormonal changes that allow bacteria to build in the urinary tract. And hotter summer temps up the odds of dehydration, which can prevent the bladder from flushing bacteria. Here's how to keep UTIs at bay
Swap out soaks
Baths can up UTI risk, since bacteria and dirt from your skin collects in the water and can reach your urethra. Plus, certain bubble bath additives can disrupt the balance of good bacteria in the vagina that help ward off infections. A better bet: a shower. And if you do still crave the occasional soak, try adding 1/2 cup of baking soda to create a sitz bath, which helps reduce irritation and the risk of developing a UTI.
