Growth, cycles and beauty are all characteristic of the natural realm. Nature, apart from standing on its own without humans, is both a metaphysical concept, pointing at the way humans live and organise themselves, and a pragmatic one that relates to how and where they dwell. It has been the subject of artistic production since prehistoric times, by means of direct description, as a process to be observed, or even as an altar from which to draw stimulus. So as a subject, a catalyst and an omnipresence, nature is an essential part of this whole to which artists connect, and a means to their ends.
