Among the many iconic figures artists choose to portray, Bruce Lee is one of the most popular,
usually depicted topless in a fierce fighting pose, as in the portraits by Yan Pei-Ming. I have
never really followed the oeuvre of the martial artist, actor, filmmaker and founder of Jeet Kune
Do, and have never seen his movies or appreciated his teachings. Nevertheless, I became
obsessed with the idea of dedicating an issue of Pipeline to a figure who seemed to appear in
so many artists’ work around the globe – and not only artists who produce large numbers of
celebrity paintings, featuring a range of famous people that happens to include Lee.
