On 9 August we celebrate National Women’s Day. In the regular column “Hengel Potpourri” field editor Frik van Zyl pays homage to a very special woman who is also the co-author of this column, Riëtte Lubbe.
August is also known as the windy month and Neville Barnard and a few fishing buddies made the most of this by travelling to Mazeppa Bay on the Transkei Wild Coast for some kite fishing. They had a very successful session, targeting mainly sharks.
Moving inland, Terry Babich shares some useful tips on fly fishing for carp. He discusses aspects such as the required tackle, water conditions and angling methods. The conservation of our fish resources is a priority for many anglers. Neville Barnard takes a look at how to safely handle carp, focusing on the correct methods of landing and netting the fish, photographing and releasing it. Three items are essential to achieve this: a soft landing net, a weighing mat and a carp cradle or carp mat.
Namibia takes great pride in its freshwater fisheries resources and its Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, has launched one of the largest freshwater fish-tagging programmes in Southern Africa. Anglers who want to try a new fishing venue should read Danie Engelbrecht’s article on Riekertsdam, also known as Marico-Bosveld Dam. Situated about 14 km from Groot-Marico in North-West, this dam also boasts a caravan park. Known for its big black bass, kurper, carp and barbel, Riekertsdam is the perfect fishing venue as it also has clean water and no hyacinth or aquatic grass.
All this and even more in the angler’s friend – Stywe Lyne / Tight Lines.
