Portugal is mourning the death of five firefighters who died in the line of duty in August. As the Algarve Resident hit the newsstands on Thursday (August 29), with a front cover story reporting on the deaths of four firefighters this month, another ‘bombeiro’ – a 21-year-old woman - had been killed combating a fire in Serra do Caramulo. Several fires have caused widespread destruction across many regions in the north of Portugal, leaving our firefighters completely exhausted. Associations representing firefighters have been complaining about lack of support from the government.

Portugal has suffered the effects of the European recession worse than most countries in the union, with austerity measures biting deep into the disposable income of all classes of society. But the news emerged last week that Portugal has posted the best growth figures of any European nation at 1.1% of GDP. After the doom and gloom that has made headlines for most of the last year or so this is refreshing news indeed, our special report covers the prime minister\'s PSD party presentation held in the Algarve last week where the data was revealed.

Our lead story this week looks into the possibility that VAT in Portuguese restaurants may return to a reasonable level after last year\'s massive hike that saw restaurant all over the country forced to increase their prices. This is just one of the many austerity measures introduced by the government that seems to be backfiring, forcing restaurants to either close their doors or lay off staff and the pressure is on Portugal\'s new economy minister to try and reverse the law.
