As I write this letter, we are in the early stages of President Donald Trump’s second term. The inauguration was exactly one week ago, and already an image from that day has become an indelible symbol of presidential power: a photo of the tech industry’s great data barons seated front and center at the swearing-in ceremony. Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg all sat shoulder to shoulder, almost as if on display, in front of some of the most important figures of the new administration. They were not the only tech leaders in Washington, DC, that week. Tim Cook, Sam Altman, and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew also put in appearances during the president’s first days back in action.

Technologies (TR10) list is
one of my favorite things we do as a publication. We
spend months researching and discussing which technologies will make the list. We try to highlight a mix of
items that reflect innovations happening in various fields.
We look at consumer technologies, large industrial -scale
projects, biomedical advances, changes in computing,
climate solutions, the latest in AI, and more. 

What are we going to eat? It is the
eternal question. We humans have
been asking ourselves this for as
long as we have been human. The
question itself can be tedious, exciting, urgent, or desperate, depending on who is asking
and where. There are many parts of the world where
there is no answer.
Famine is a critical issue in Gaza, Sudan, Syria,
Myanmar, and Mali, among other places. As I write
this, there are people going hungry tonight in western
North Carolina because of the unprecedented flooding
brought on by the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. And
even when hunger isn’t an acute issue, it can remain a
persistently chronic one. Some 2.3 billion people around
the world suffer from food insecurity, according to the
World Health Organization. In the United States alone,
the USDA has found that more than 47 million people
live in food-insecure households.

With this issue, we wanted to celebrate our milestone as a publication without dwelling too much on our own past.
Victory laps are for race cars, not magazines. Instead, we decided to try to use history as a way to explore what things may look like over the next 125 years.

Do you want to play a game?  For children, play comes so naturally. They don’t have to be encouraged to play. They don’t need equipment, or the latest graphics processors, or the perfect conditions—they just do it. What’s more, study after study has found that play has a crucial role in childhood growth and development. If you want to witness the absolute rapture of creative expression, just observe the unstructured play of children.

One of the formative memories of my youth took place on a camping trip at an Alabama state park. My dad’s friend brought an at-the-time gee-whiz gadget, a portable television, and we used it to watch the very first space shuttle launch from under the loblolly pines. It was thrilling. And it was hard not to believe, watching that shuttle go up (and, a few days later, land), that we were entering an era when travel into the near reaches of space would become common.

Is there anything more fascinating than a hidden world?  A hidden world is fundamentally different from the undiscovered. We know the hidden world is there. We just can’t see it or reach it. Something about this tantalizing proximity has fascinated us throughout history. The blank spaces on the map that Joseph Conrad referred to in Heart of Darkness were, to Europeans, hidden worlds.

Happy New Year!The start of a new year offers such a great opportunity to reflect while also thinking about what’s to come. That is especially true for us, and for this issue. This year marks the 125th anniversary of Technology Review. On the back page of this issue, you can read the original letter written in 1899 announcing the new publication. That first issue, bound up with twine in our library, is a remarkable artifact. And it’s just one of very many

For all of history we’ve turned to technology, again and again, to
help us solve our hardest problems. Technology gave us warmth
and light when it was cold and dark. It helped us pull fish from
the sea and crops from the earth so we would not be hungry. It
enabled us to cross over the oceans and fly through the skies,
shrinking vast distances down to routine travel. It’s given us vaccines and treatments and cures. It has made virtually every fact
and all of human knowledge available to us instantly on demand.
We can speak to each other in entirely different languages and
be understood using nothing more than a slim slab of glass and
metals in our pocket.

In his essay introducing this year’s class of Innovators Under
35, Andrew Ng argues that AI is a general-purpose technology,
much like electricity, that will be built into everything else (page
74). Indeed, it’s true, and it’s already happening.
AI is rapidly becoming a tool that powers all sorts of other
tools, a technological underpinning for a range of applications
and devices. It can helpfully suggest a paella recipe in a web app.
It can predict a protein structure from an amino acid sequence.
It can paint. It can drive a car. It can relentlessly replicate itself,
hijack the electrical grid for unlimited processing power, and
wipe out all life on Earth.

This one that you are reading right now. I’m very sorry.
Look, I didn’t set out to do this, but the thing about magazines is that they have very hard deadlines, and if you miss them,
you’re left with blank pages. So when I realized I only had a few
hours left to finalize this, well, I freaked out.
And then I did what an increasing number of us are doing:
I turned to ChatGPT, OpenAI’s massively mind-blowing generative AI software, to help me out. After training it on some
of my previous work, I asked about the use of AI in education.

For the past 22 years, we’ve been publishing an annual list of
the 10 biggest breakthrough technologies. In 2018, we defined
a breakthrough as “a technology, or perhaps even a collection of
technologies, that will have a profound effect on our lives.” That’s
pretty broad! But it gets at the heart of what we try to identify:
transformative, world-changing technologies.

Hi. How are you? I have some news. You’re going
to die. We’re all going to die. 
I’ve been thinking about this not only because
we’ve been putting this issue, the Mortality issue,
together but also because I’ve hit one of those
arbitrary milestones in life. Which is to say I turn
50 this month. 
This is mostly pretty cool. Beats the alternative, as they say. But one decidedly uncool thing
about being almost 50 is that my “bad” LDL cholesterol is too high. The obvious solution here is
to improve my diet and get more exercise. But if
that were so easy, no one would have high cholesterol, right? Another option might be to go on
statins—use medication to bring it down. Lots
of people do this, but it’s a treatment, not a cure,
and the side effects can be intense.

THIS IS THE GENDER ISSUE, OUR FIRST.
Frankly, it is a topic that this magazine and others in its space gave too little
thought to for too many decades. Not only has gender long been a differentiator in the way people experience technology, but technology also increasingly
mediates the way we understand and experience gender. When we started
planning for this issue months ago, it felt both overdue and like an important
lens through which to view the limitless possibilities of the future. Now, as
we’re wrapping it up, it feels urgent in a wholly new way

n my street, out on the western edge of what passes
for suburbs in San Francisco, there are cameras
just about everywhere you look. 
I’m part of this privatized surveillance system.
An aging Dropcam peers out of my front window. It’s not clear I even need it: across the street, three other
cameras look back. These little sentries are aimed at the street,
but they also have unblinking views into my living room. Were
someone to try to burglarize my home, one of those cameras
would likely capture it.

Money is weird now.
When we were settling in on the theme for this issue, I decided
to buy an NFT of an Olive Garden for my friend Katie, who really
loves Olive Garden. It was also an attempt to try to better understand NFTs. Each of the “Non-Fungible Olive Gardens,” really
just a photo of a restaurant, was minted for $19.99 and listed on
the NFT trading platform OpenSea—the amount tethered to the
price of a Tour of Italy menu item. The NFTs were not associated
with the actual Olive Garden (though each one corresponds to a
real-life location). But still, it seemed like a bargain!

Welcome to the breakthroughs issue.
Every year, our reporters and editors identify 10 breakthrough
technologies—we call them the TR10—that are poised to have
transformative effects on the way we live and work. You can see
our list starting on page 15.
Several of the breakthroughs we cover this year have been on
the horizon for ages. Some, such as Mosquirix, the first malaria
vaccine to win approval from the World Health Organization
(page 54), have been in development for decades but are only now
being released. Others, like passwordless logins (page 18), have
been gradually coming online for many years but only recently
hit some sort of tipping point.

Not a drop to drink. As we were closing this issue, I came across a video
on Twitter of a highway just outside Vancouver,
submerged in water. It wasn’t the only one. The
densely populated urban heart of British Columbia
was cut off from the rest of Canada by flooding and
mudslides after an atmospheric river barreled through. The country’s busiest port lost access to rail service, stranding containers.
Hundreds of motorists had to be rescued from slide-isolated
highways on military helicopters. The only way to get to the rest
of the country by road was to detour through the United States

This is the first issue of the magazine I’ve had the pleasure of
working on. Maybe you have been reading Technology Review
for years, like me. Or maybe this is your first issue. Either way, I’m
excited by the opportunity to make this magazine something you
look forward to reading every time it appears. I hope you enjoy
reading this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
I want to start by making you a promise about Technology

Our shared hallucination. Inside the three-pound lumps of mostly fat and water inside
our heads we can, in a very real sense, find the root of everything we know and ever will know. Sure, the universe gave
rise to our brains. But what good is the cosmos without brains
and, more specifically, minds? Without them, there’d be no
understanding, no appreciation, no probing of great mysteries. Which is what this issue is all about: our quest to understand
what’s between our ears, and in so doing,
better understand ourselves.

Though we’ve called it the “Change” issue, this edition of the magazine is really about two things:
reflection and empowerment.
For far too many of us, the pandemic has been
a study in feeling powerless, and we’ve had little
time to reflect as we focus on keeping ourselves
and our loved ones safe, employed, and as mentally sound as
possible. We’ve been forced to cope almost
constantly with the twisting, morphing
uncertainties that life has thrown at us

restaurants most, or plays, musicals, art galleries,
museums, nights out at the pub, the club, a ball
game ... ah, those were the days.
The thrill of gathering, of being a part of
something, is the hallmark of the city. Cities
bring us together, inspire us, spur our creativity. At their best,
they are monuments of human achievement that draw people
from far and wide. They open our eyes to new ideas and cultures,
and become greater than the sum of streets and buildings and
crowded sidewalks.v

rogress.” We take for granted that it’s a good thing.
We constantly invoke it to justify change. But all
the ways in which society is measured—from
economic indicators to health and education
metrics to markers of political development and
technological sophistication—rely on long-held
assumptions about what progress is. As the economic and political shocks of this still newish century have
shown, growing numbers of people are, or
feel, excluded by the progress they were
told would benefit everyone. And many of
the countries that score best on traditional
measures of progress have done worst in
coping with the covid-19 pandemic, the
clearest sign possible that these measures
are missing something.

robots—if that’s the kind of science-fiction-y stuff
you expect to read about in a special issue on technology and food, you won’t be disappointed—see
pages 26, 32, 44, and 50. (And if you like actual
science fiction, turn to page 80.)
What makes these technologies so fascinating? Sure, it’s claimed that they’ll make
food production better—more humane,
more reliable, more efficient. But beyond
that, I think we’re at once intrigued and
repulsed by the idea that something as
familiar, essential, and “natural” as food
can be deconstructed and rebuilt from
its component cells, tweaked like a piece
of software, or grown without ever being
touched by a human hand.

four descendants were to diagnose the ills of 21st-century
civilization,” writes Richard Fisher in our opening essay on
page 8, “they would observe a dangerous short-termism: a
collective failure to escape the present moment and look
further ahead.” This condition is neither permanent nor
new, Fisher says: human thinking becomes more blinkered
in times of turmoil and more expansive in periods of prosperity
and calm. But it’s particularly extreme right
now, especially for Americans, thanks to
the covid-19 pandemic and the bitterly
contested US election.

n the last few decades, the received wisdom among global
elites has been that technology tends to make the world
flatter, smaller, more open, and more equal. This now
seems increasingly false, or at least simplistic. Countries
are vying for dominance in technologies that could give
them a strategic advantage: communications, energy, AI,
surveillance, agricultural tech, cybersecurity, military tech … and
now, amidst a global pandemic, medicine
and manufacturing. The urge for nations
to amass technological prowess and use it
as an instrument of geopolitical power is
what we mean by technonationalism. The
thesis of this issue is that the post–Cold
War order was already splintering, and
covid-19 is finishing the job.

Two entrepreneurs share a goal: to help people
overcome opioid addiction. One, Zack Gray, has
an Ivy League education and $2.7 million in venture capital funding. The other, Nikki King, went to the University of Kentucky and has a fraction
of that amount, cobbled together from grants,
donations, and Medicaid reimbursements.

Iam writing this on April 10, 2020. Twenty-five days have
passed since San Francisco became the first US city to
impose a stay-at-home order on its residents. It feels like six
months. As the covid-19 pandemic has advanced across the
planet at dizzying speed, economies and health-care systems
have toppled like dominos. At this moment, a tracker run by
Johns Hopkins University shows 1,617,204 confirmed cases of
coronavirus infection and 97,039 deaths
worldwide. That includes 18,279 deaths
in Italy, 16,686 in the US, 15,843 in Spain,
12,210 in France, and 7,978 in the UK. By
the time I finish writing, these numbers
will all have markedly increased.

Every year, we pick 10 recent technological breakthroughs that we predict will have a big impact in
the years to come. We’ve been doing it for nearly
two decades, and we’ve been pretty good at predicting big trends like data mining, natural- language
processing, and microfluidics, but not so great at
specific products.

phones with hologram-style 3D displays?
Microbes that turn carbon dioxide from
the air directly into diesel fuel? Electronic
implants that dissolve in your body when
their job is done? “Social TV” that lets you
talk about shows with your friends online
while you watch? (Yeah, we have that—it’s
called Twitter.)
