BEYOND PROFIT
In a borderless economy, the highly aggressive and competitive global market tends to place profit as its highest value and ultimate goal. Transnational companies shift their manufacturing units to developing countries, taking advantage of cheap labor, often, under inhumane conditions. This situation is a fertile ground for corruption and for exploitation which benefits a few and causes detriment to a majority who, despite their hard labor, do not reap the fruits. Instead, they are left with meager scraps for their and their families’ survival. Inside sweatshops or in the fields, the hunger for profit reduces human beings to mere tools for a higher production at a lower cost to be able to compete in this increasingly selfish world. There seems to be no bridle capable of slowing down the fast pace of these unfair market practices.
Only when we openly fight unjust trade practices and commit ourselves to be fair traders, believing that even a simple act of trade done fairly to those who labored for it will make a difference, can we rally against the idolatry of profit and manifest a heart that feels for the powerless and the victims of exploitation.
