Photographed by Scott A Woodward, our cover story is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional bahay na bato designed by JJ Acuña, in collaboration with his sister, lawyer and philanthropist Geraldine Acuña- Sunshine. A true love letter to their heritage, the Acuña family home in the heart of the metropolis is a beautiful resort-like haven filled with local art and furniture. 

We also explore this concept of Modern Filipino Architecture in a more in-depth manner as we speak to the architect Manny Miñana on the theories
behind his body of work. From traditional weaves becoming a mainstay for home décor to a young Filipina, Mirei Monticelli, making waves at this year’s Salone di Mobile, this issue champions successful intersection of our exceptional craftsmanship and ingenious homegrown designers.

Aside from this, we also feature the thoughtfully conceptualised space of banker, Anne Alonso, who worked with Joseph Goyenechea on a full renovation of her 3-bedroom apartment that showcases her love for unique antiques and local art. Other creative personalities who opened their homes to us are the vivacious Marga Nograles and the über cool Bea Ledesma.

We also explore the soulful Danish concept of Hygge, which means to create a warm and cosy atmosphere where one can enjoy good things with good people. I can’t think of a better way to sum up what this issue is all about.

We focus on the timeless appeal of Mid- Century Modern design and the ethos behind some of the greatest designers the world has witnessed. Ken and Isa Mishuku, owners of vintage furniture platform Mid-Century Manila, open their home filled with original collectibles and share how they’ve embraced the mindset of Ray and Charles Eames. Tokyo-based photographer, Andrew Faulk, artistically reinterprets Isamu Noguchi’s philosophies and aesthetic through a series of images taken across Japan.

We feature the people who have decorated their homes as a poignant reflection of their own personal style. In this issue is the gorgeous family seaside home that Mikka Padua shared with close friend Kitty Bunag, where her vivid memory lives on in the painterly colours of the La Union sunset. Bianca Monzon Cueva and Ria Prieto, who are both deeply rooted in the fashion industry, approach décor in the same way that they would construct an ensemble—with love and balance. Throughout this issue, you’ll find people who are avid collectors and have an uncanny knack of soulfully curating spaces filled with impulse buys and objects they adore.

In this issue we celebrate the hands that make the beautiful objects that fill our homes and the raw materials from which they are born. Photographed by Paco Guerrero, our cover stories—Jet Acuzar and the workshops of Las Casas de Acuzar in Bataan—illustrate the excellence of Philippine craftsmanship. We juxtapose Jet’s minimalist yet heritage-centric home with the wonderful, creative grit of her family’s atelier. Chef Aaron Isip also opens his bachelor pad, sharing his Filipino wabisabi ethos. There are also wonderful stories from across our country featuring master potters, historic mansions and sustainable woodsmiths. And placing the spotlight on raw materials, we also showcase handblown glass, luxury leather and sleek stone lighting.

We also cannot ignore that glorious blue sky and brilliant sunshine that embrace us during these summer months. To add a splash of colour: there are colourful bedroom designs, vibrant coastal homes and stunning abstract artworks by young contemporary artists like Gabby Prado, JC Intal, and Fitz Herrera. The latter’s gorgeous and uplifting work has a place in my office above refurbished, custom-made, vintage narra buffet by Allen Oblena. The impeccably elegant Fortune Ledesma gives us a peek into a day in her life while Juana Manahan Yupangco teaches us how to eat a rainbow palette of produce.

Tatler Homes Philippines reflect on the key concept "Dual Living", where the home is an integral part of our lifestyles—being the axis around which not just routine but also work, school, and leisure revolve. Architect Sarah Canlas, whose stunning, self-designed Antipolo family home features on this edition's cover, introduces us to the concept as she herself was fashioning a life split between a chic urban condo and an expansive retreat. It is now central to many a special occasion. It is where memorable meals are whipped up. It is where friends and family love to gather.

Within our contemporary lifestyle, it has become de rigeur for one’s kitchen to become an inspiring space. You can achieve just that with the latest kitchen trends as spotted by Asia Tatler in this year’s EuroCucina during Milan Design Week. In the gorgeous light of a perfect summer day, nature’s hues, too, are amplified. Step into a suburban sanctuary south of Manila designed by the architect Noel Saratan for Patsy Zobel de Ayala. His ingenious architecture makes you feel immediately one with nature as the luscious greens of tree ferns and palms, and the calming blues of pools and ponds blur the lines between indoors and outdoors. 

In a similar fashion, the vivid African sky seems to float right into The Observatory, the spectacular home of IT entrepreneur Rory Sweet, nestled high in South Africa’s Waterburg Mountain Range.
