It has been a year since the first COVID-19 case was confirmed
in Malaysia, and its effects have since taken a huge toll on the
country. With the daily increase of positive cases, restrictions
and various lockdowns implemented, industry players now
need to take proactive “the new normal” measures to ensure
business continuity during this unprecedented time...

Since the global outbreak of COVID-19, Malaysia’s economy
is forecast to shrink by 4.5% in 2020. However, it has since
showed signs of recovery from -28% in April to -3.2% in June,
and in 2021, it is expected to further recover and expand at a

When COVID-19 was first reported by mass media in December
2019, authorities around the world began implementing
lockdown measures in an effort to contain the pandemic,
which brought much of global economic activity to a halt. Due
to the impact of the pandemic, Malaysia’s economy is forecast
to shrink by 6% in 2020; businesses in the country were
reportedly losing as much as RM2.4 billion a day when MCO
was imposed from 18 March to 3 May 2020 alone...

The World Bank noted in its ‘Global Economic Prospects’
report that the on-going COVID-19 pandemic has caused the
broadest collapse of the global economy since 1870; the world
economy is projected to contract by 5.2% this year, the worst
recession in 80 years...

Trade wars generally do not result in winners and with investors reluctant to invest, construction activities in Malaysia may be at risk of becoming collateral damage. Concurrently, with declining oil prices and Covid-19 resulting in a pandemic, the economy looks gloomy but not insurmountable...

A research from industry experts has reported total deals for global construction and real estate
industry is worth US$9.5 billion for December 2019. The value marked a decrease of 49.4% over
the previous month and a drop of 40.7% when compared with the last 12-month average of US$16.6 billion.

As we move further into year 2020, we are still plagued with all the lows from
the previous year. This has spurred many industry players into action by looking
at alternative options to improve the way they do business. Most recently, it has
been highlighted that the construction industry is increasingly exploring the use
of robots to speed up work and alleviate skills shortages – but where could this
lead?...

The latest statistics showed that Malaysia has
a population of more than 32 million, of which
two-thirds are living in the urban areas and major
cities. The numbers are increasing every day and
all of whom need affordable housing as well as
social, transportation and utility infrastructure....

The REHDA Property Industry Survey 1H 2019
recorded a reduction in the number of project
launches as well as respondents. Although
there was a spike in 15% sales, the sentiments
towards the property industry for the next 10
months remained mostly neutral....

architects, engineers and even contractors –
‘building’ isn’t just about adding a new block in
the already congested concrete jungle; it’s the
whole package....

It has been a busy time for Malaysia’s building and
construction industry. Despite an early forecast of
slower growth, some new developments continue
across the country. It has been all hands on deck
as the supply chain worked tirelessly formulating
initiatives to stimulate sales and decrease the
supply overhang.
The industry hit the headlines when the Malaysian government launched
FundMyHome.com, the country’s first private sector-driven property crowdfunding
platform.
Presently, Malaysia has two crowdfunding platforms, Equity Crowdfunding
(ECF) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) financing framework in the capital market for micro,
small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to raise funds. As at December 2018, a total
of RM261.52 million has been raised by issuers via both market-based financing
