शिक्षा यह वेदांगों में से एक है जिसे वेद- शरीर की नाक कहा गया है - शिक्षा घ्राण तु वेदस्य। सामान्य रूप से शिक्षा को उच्चारण-विज्ञान कहा जा सकता है। अशुद्ध उच्चारा करने वालों को ‘म्लेच्छ’ कहा जाता रहा है। शुद्ध-उच्चारण करने वालों के सम्पर्क में न आने के कारण आर्य राष्ट्र की सीमा के बाहर रहने वाले लोग म्लेच्छ कहे गए।

एक और शब्द है - शीक्षा। इसका अर्थ है - व्यक्ति की सोई हुई (ज्ञान-शक्ति) चेतना को देखने की प्रक्रिया - शयनं ईक्षते इति शिक्षा । तैत्तिरीय उपनिषद् की शिक्षावल्ली में कहा गया है - अथ शीक्षां व्याख्यास्यामः। वेद शिक्षा समाप्त होने के बाद आचार्य अपने अन्तेवासी के भीतर की क्षमता का समावर्तन-संस्कार में उल्लेख करता है।
