Lately, India has witnessed many discoveries and achieved many accomplishments. India’s second moon mission seeking to discover the unchartered Lunar south pole by landing a rover was launched on July 22. India revoked Kashmir’s special status. India celebrated its 73rd Independence Day on 15th August, to name a few.

France is all geared up for G7. The country took up its Presidency in January 2019 with the key theme of combating inequality. G7 Summit will bring together the Heads of State and Government from the seven countries in Biarritz from 24 to 26 August 2019.

Among other EU countries - Germany, France, the Netherlands, Irelands, Finland, and Estonia - the Netherlands, which is one of the most English-friendly European nations with 90 percent citizens speaking the language, is evolving as an alternate destination.

The Netherlands is a leading global knowledge economy and is one of the twenty largest economies in the world. The country has an ancient history of moving around the oceans of the world and trading with other nations. In times of global,

India-ASEAN relationship has progressed a long way since the early 1990s – from being largely economic to a more broad-based strategic partnership. ASEAN’s uniqueness to India’s foreign policy is exemplified by the range of India’s investments and high-level rendezvous over the past several years, starting with the launch of the Act East policy in 2014. The present economic relationship between India and ASEAN countries presents a multitude of industrial, commercial, and investment prospects.

The new year begins as an empty slate with nothing but a feel of innumerable opportunities and optimism. January always starts with great prospects and a sense of a new beginning, fresh beliefs and initiatives. We hope 2019 brings prodigious gains for India in the international arena.

In the first week of January, Observer Research Foundation (ORF) and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) jointly organised their foremost international forum, the Raisina Dialogue, for the third year in a row. India is indeed seeking to play a much more vigorous role in dealing with the enormous economic, environmental,
and political revolutions and disruptions affecting the world.

21st century warfare has made conflicts more dangerous and devastating with technological advances concentrated mainly in the military field, resulting in the development of more sophisticated and deadly weapons that have the potential to lead to mass destruction. This scenario stems from a uni-polar world political system characterised by power disequilibrium and US hegemonic power viewing it as an opportunity to lead the world even by force.

In the international arena, these two months were very interesting with major happenings that seem set to shape the future of world dynamics. The death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is an example. Global Centre Stage looks at whether the incident will impact world politics or change the nature of relations between

The United States has, for most of the twentieth and all of the twenty-fi rst century, been a vanguard of the liberal world order, promoting rule of law, democracy and respect for human rights in countries across the world through both diplomatic and military means. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the America of today is not the America of yesterday. The former leader of the international regime established after the end of the Second World War has now turned within. The fact that Donald Trump, the newly elected President of the United States, is at the centre of this shift is not surprising. His 'Make America Great Again' campaign
rhetoric was hard to miss.

Speaking of complex negotiations, Britain's embattled leader Theresa May strives to present a united front at the head of the Brexit negotiating table as the EU and Britain struggle to chalk out a comprehensive agreement regarding the exit. Our story outlines the outstanding issues that still need to be resolved in the run up to the UK's formal exit from the EU in March 2020.

One area where the British and Europeans do see eye-to-eye is on international trade - championing barrier- and tariff-free trade, in stark contrast to US President Donald Trump. The difference in position between the US and its traditional allies came to a head at the recently concluded G7 summit, which ended early following Trump's abrupt departure.

In the world of globalisation, it is imperative for countries to have free markets to strengthen economic infrastructure which will, thus, pave the way for the overall betterment of nations. In this context, our cover story on ‘India’s engagements with FTAs: Challenges and Opportunities’ is an attempt to give a holistic picture of the country’s existing trade framework which signifies economic integration as giving rise to intra-group trade and multilateralism. The year 2017 was witness to major developments in the world arena. In west Europe, Britain voted itself out from the EU, formally dubbed as ‘Brexit’; while Catalonia - an important historical constituency of Spain, has been bidding for elections for separate statehood and independence. Meanwhile, the US President, Trump, in typical fashion, has unequivocally declared Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, which was promptly denounced by the UN. 2017 also saw the passage of many important presidential elections – including the French, German and Czech Republic’s.

Closer home, as 2017 draws to a close, we bring three special country reports.

The fi rst report carries a feature from Bangladesh, which recently celebrated
its 47th ‘Victory Day’, a war that was hard-fought by the Bengali nation
with Pakistani forces. The independence came at a heavy price, as there was much loss of lives – of unarmed civilians as well. Today, Bangladesh is making giant strides towards progress, as it records a steady 7.28 percent growth percentage with the poverty rate reduced to an equitable 22.4 percent. Bangladesh has also done its bit on the humanitarian ground, by providing shelter to millions of forcibly displaced homeless Rohingyas.

Our cover story for this month underlines the importance of a trade framework between the Commonwealth nations and Britain in a post-Brexit world. Standing on the cusp of an uncertain future, it is important for Britain to up its ante in settling the country’s Brexit bill by consolidating its position on the trade front.

With Britain preparing to wade through the ongoing challenges, China on the other hand, is moving to become a dominant global player. In spotlight, we highlight the role of China as the leading member of BRICS encompassing a high-handed approach that can certainly backfire in view of the cooperation needed from other members in the long-run.

India’s diplomacy is undergoing massive transition in the light of PM Modi’s recent state visits for strengthening bilateral ties. With respect to the same, Ambassador of the Maldives to India, H.E. Ahmed Mohamed recognizes India’s larger role in fulfilling the development needs of the world and Maldives in particular. Mired in the challenges of extremism, drug use and terrorism, Maldives faces great security threats, which the ambassador feels are hampering growth of the nation at a broader level.

Our Cover story for this month, ‘Chabahar: India’s Strategic Gateway on Fast Track’ takes a look at the Chabahar port and India’s developmental efforts in the region. While analysts believe that that the presence of Chinese and Indian military in these ports will increase Sino-Indian rivalry, there are other expectations that Chabahar will diminish the importance of Gwadar port as a transit hub for Central Asian republics. These and other contingencies will have to be factored in by India, Iran and Afghanistan while progressing in the region.

It took many negotiations, diplomacy, some cajoling and coaxing to bring China to understand what’s best for it on the Doklam standoff. The brisk resolution of the crises and expeditious disengagement from within both sides of the border emerged as a major diplomatic victory for India. In Focus, we review the events surrounding the showdown and how the standoff was finally resolved.

Japan India ties go back a long way. In the 1950s and beyond, Japan was closely tied to the USA in a security treaty relationship and India’s nonalignment was perceived in Japan as leaning too close to Russia. Despite these differences, Japan took the momentous decision to make India the fi rst destination for its overseas Development Aid Programme. Since 2003, India has remained the largest recipient of Japanese economic assistance.

The launching of India’s Look East policy in the early 1990s marked a strategic shift in India’s vision of the world and its place in the global economy. The centrality of India’s position in the Asian region was highlighted first by India’s Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in his famed book, “The Discovery of India”. This month, we look at India’s evolving relationship with the Indochina region, better known today as ASEAN. In the same feature, we will also be looking at the healthy trade relationship between the US and Philippines, as the latter has recorded a strong GDP growth of 6.9 percent in 2016, backed by its strong economic fundamentals. This month, our Spotlight section puts the focus on the growing strategic ties between Japan and India in areas of defence cooperation. This issue also includes a special biographical feature on Mr. Sanjeev Sinha, the newly appointed advisor of the INR 98,000 Cr. Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project (Shinkansen), selected by the Japan Railways for the mammoth undertaking.

Our Special Report presents a detailed study of India’s economic ties with Bahrain, one of our oldest trading partners. The dynamics between Bahrain and India are currently evolving from bilateral trade to increased cooperation and economic collaboration. The year 2017 celebrates the 45th anniversary of the establishment of full diplomatic relations between India and Vietnam. It also marks the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Strategic Partnership Agreement. In September last year, India and Vietnam elevated this strategic partnership to a comprehensive strategic partnership. It has been an interesting journey spanning five decades of multiple high level visits and diplomatic exchange, to build the core of the bilateral relationship.

This August edition carries a Special Report on Vietnam, highlighting its importance in India’s Foreign Policy as a reliable friend and trusted partner. The issue looks at Vietnam’s distinctive culture, unique geography and favourable presence from an investment standpoint, as the country emerges as an aspiring Asian tiger.

The border scrum at Doklam, located at the tri-junction of India’s Sikkim, Bhutan and China has attracted front-page coverage. While Doklam has been a point of territorial dispute and skirmish between China and Bhutan for some time now, Our Cover Story, ‘Collaboration with China, not Conflict’ examines why it is important for India to consider whether it would be in national interest to antagonise China and render them into an adversary.
