IPF Aug 2019 had 2 Focus Sections – Electrical & Electronics (Power Generation, Switchgear & Control Panel), and Batteries & UPS System. While Indian manufacturing sector promises to offer huge growth opportunity, imports are the major deterrents in realising this potential. Take the example of electrical & electronics (E&E) sector, which saw significant increase (28.7 per cent) in imports in 2018-19 (Rs 715.70 billion) compared to 2017- 18 (Rs 556.08 billion). Indian electrical equipment industry is reeling under pressure with the consistent increase in imports (especially from China) threatening its growth. While imports from neighbouring countries have led to the closure of many homegrown businesses, some had to even switch from manufacturing to trading! IPF Aug 2019 analyses trends in the Indian electrical & electronics industry and the impact of ASEAN-India FTA (Free Trade Agreement) on the industry. The growing demand for automobiles is increasing the sales of batteries in India. This is encouraging several domestic battery makers to expand their manufacturing capacities. With demand for electric vehicles on the rise, some of them are also planning their foray into Lithium ion battery sector. On the other hand, industrial end-users such as IT, telecom, solar plants, etc, are anticipated to boost demand for UPS in India in the coming years.
