The Indian automotive market is experiencing overall slowdown as the sales show a staunch drop compared to the last year. Indian automotive industry is currently struggling through a tough time due to low demand while the rise in domestic raw material prices of steel has added fuel to the fire. Many from the industry believe that the upcoming deadline to comply with BS VI norms amid such time will worsen the situation. “Cover Story” of APF Oct 2019 discusses effects of slowdown in the auto industry on the metalworking. Interiors play an important role in vehicle design as it can help in reducing reduce stress and increase safety of the driver and co-occupants. Poor braking system - along with other factors – is one of the reasons for vehicle accidents. Hence, efficient brakes are important for the safety of the vehicle and its occupants. After government’s adoption of electric vehicle (EV) policy, India saw a slew of start-ups launching a ranging of products from cars, sports bikes to E-bikes. Start-ups are offering innovative solutions in key areas like battery, E-rickshaw, accessories and charging stations in partnerships with government agencies and other companies. “EV Cover Story” discusses how start-ups are leaving their imprints on Indian EV sector. With all its policy initiatives favouring electric vehicles (EV), Government of India (GoI) has made its intention clear with respect to future roadmap for the automotive industry. As India starts it EV journey, APF Aug 2019 features an exclusive interview of Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog (the think-tank of GoI) to know the country’s changing EV market dynamics driven by government policies. India is set to overtake Japan to become the third-largest automotive market in the world by 2021, thus offering huge growth opportunity for garage equipment suppliers. Sluggish auto sales in recent months, drive towards electric vehicles, BS VI emission norms (affecting sales of diesel vehicles), etc are putting brakes on dealership expansion plans in the country. In India, which is one of the leading vehicle markets globally, automotive lighting market is projected to grow at a CAGR of over 12 per cent in the near future, on the back of improvement in vehicle safety standards, advanced features in vehicle lighting systems, and government regulations towards safety & efficiency. The “Special Feature” of APF June 2019 analysed why LEDs are must for automotive lighting in electric vehicles. 
The two-wheeler industry volume growth might register a 3-5 per cent expansion in FY2020 with the subdued consumer sentiments continuing to weigh on demand in H1FY2020. On the exports front, the growth rate is likely to moderate from FY2019 levels but is expected to remain healthy. Over the medium to long term, the 2W industry is expected to report a volume CAGR of 6-8 per cent, says the author in “OEM Corner”.

Automotive industry has been an early adopter of robotics for application such as welding, painting, glue dispensing, etc. With auto manufacturing processes demanding flexibility and efficiency, market for low-to-medium payload robots are likely to experience much faster growth than heavy payload robots. And presence of large number of SMEs in auto ancillary segment is only going to propel this market further. According to MarketsandMarkets, the automotive axle market of India is projected to grow to 234,497.8 thousand units by 2021 at a CAGR of 5.43 per cent. Growing vehicle production, demand for comfort, and the need to reduce maintenance costs are the major drivers pushing the growth of the automotive axle market in the country. Because of the continuous advancements in technology and the increasing demand for all-wheel drive (AWD)/ four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles, live axles category is estimated to dominate the Indian automotive industry by 2021. The “Special Feature” of APF May 2019 analysed impact of the new axle loading norms on the automotive axle industry in the country.
The roll out of the government’s FAME II policy will give a needed impetus and help achieve greater penetration of EV. Allocation for the scheme for 2019-20 is estimated to be at Rs 1,500 crore, Rs 5,000 crore in 2020-21 and Rs 3,500 crore in 2021-22. “OEM Corner” focuses on how the policy will drive growth in the electric 2W, 3W and public transport segment.



In April 2019, APF celebrated its 14th Anniversary tracking Indian auto industry's readiness to meet the new safety and fuel efficiency norms. While the changes in regulatory standards will result in new business opportunities for the suppliers, domestic component makers may not be able to take full advantage of the situation due to lack of technological capabilities and limited scope for backward integration. Chinese auto parts and raw material suppliers are likely to gain the most from the rise in sales of vehicles (having latest emission and safety features) in India as many of the auto OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers rely on components sourced from China. With India aiming to scale up production of electric vehicles and given China’s dominance in EVs (about 60 per cent of global volumes) and battery technology, imports of EV components from China will to go up in future as India does not have a well established EV parts making ecosystem. 
So how can Indian component makers gain a competitive edge? Can India reduce its dependence on imports? Is vendor consolidation the way forward? FY 17-18 ushered in a new domain of BS IV emission regulations for commercial vehicles in India. From fossil fuel fired vehicles to electrically driven cars, automotive industry has been witnessing constant evolution with technological innovations. Taking a serious note of the issue, the government has announced many steps to enhance the safety features in vehicles. The Automotive Mission Plan 2016-26 proposes to adopt a long-term roadmap for emission standards beyond BS-VI and fast-track adoption of Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP) by 2020. With global standards in place for emission and vehicle safety, India can scale new heights in auto manufacturing through a sustainable and secure path. With electric vehicles gaining traction, major automakers and component manufacturers have rolled out their plans to make lithium-ion batteries in India in the coming years. Increased vehicle interior applications and growing demand for Automated Manual Transmission are giving a boost to the specialty coatings market in India. At the same time, rising sales of premium passenger cars in the country is expected to drive the demand for eco-friendly coatings in near future.
