Crops grown in Sri Lanka including spice and herbal medicinal plants and various methods of cultivation are on display including a delightful Fish Therapy corner where the fish will tickle your feet!

February is a month of much delight in Sri Lanka with nature and culture providing many features of interest. The City of Colombo has reached a new phase in its progress moving to increased space and visitor facilities in the Port City Complex, which will be moving to be the new hub of South Asia.

The Full Moon Day festivity in Colombo features the multi-faceted “perahera” of the Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple. The Temple is also a key attraction with its range of mural paintings.

The month of January brings the call of Adam’s Peak, known as Sri Paada – the Sacred Footprint, where pilgrims come in thousands to worship the footprint of the Buddha.

The Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, is a historic Buddhist shrine with celebration of the Duruthu Full Moon in January. It is place considered sacred by the visit of the Buddha nearly 3000 years ago. The Polonnaruwa Archaeological Museum, in the medieval capital of Sri Lanka reveals many attractions from historic artefacts, tools and weapons of the time, situated by the Parakrama Samudra – the Sea of Parakrama The Hindus of Sri Lanka celebrate the “Thai Pongal” festival, with respect and worship to the Sun God, for all blessings received for good harvests. It is a family festival. 

The Maduro Oya National Park, which protects the catchments of five reservoirs is home to the Sri Lankan Elephant in the wild found in large herds, and many other animals including the wild Buffalo, Deer,  the Water Monitor, many species of snakes, crocodiles and fish in the waterways.

Sri Lanka joins the world in the celebration of Christmas. Although Christianity was formally brought to this predominantly Buddhist country with the arrival of the Portuguese in 1505, there are strong historical beliefs that Christ’s Apostle Thomas, who had travelled to India, had arrived here in AD 72 and had also preached here. Christmas is a widely celebrated festival, especially in the coastal areas that have the most Christian churches.

In a country known for its wildlife with many wildlife sanctuaries, the Gal Oya National Park is known for the large presence of elephants seen throughout the year, and the many other wild life species common to the country, from deer to leopard and the lovely peacock too. This is also a location for many Ayurveda herbs used in traditional medicine, and the Digavapi Stupa, a historic shrine of Buddhist worship, and the Dragon’s Mouth tunnel that feeds the Gal Oya reservoir with water.

Among the other attractions are the Moon Plains situated in the mountains close to Nuwara Eliya, a landscape with a grand view amidst the clouds, forest and the unique diversity of flora and fauna. With the care for nature is the mangrove eco-system that protects and encourages mangrove flora seen in estuarine mud-flats and lagoons in the coastal spread of the island.

It brings the rich culture of Sri Lanka from past to present seen in the traditions and lives of the people to this day.

The Drama of Diving is a special joy here, especially in the coral shelf on the coast, diving from Dutch built precipices off Galle and many other daring places on the Southern coast which brings pleasure and also challenges to young and old, as they move to the daring dives into the depths of sea water. This is the month of August celebrations in Sri Lanka with the Esala Perahera in Kandy, the historic procession of sight and sound as it parades in the Hill Capital for ten days in August. It is a display of cultural splendour with caparisoned elephants parading with the drummers and dancers, led by the whip-crackers, and light from torch bearers, as the majestic elephant from the ‘Dalada Maligawa' Temple of the Tooth Relic - carries the jewelled golden casket of the revered relic, in a tradition dating back two millennia.

In addition to the Buddhist pageantry that continues from royal patronage of the past – from the mid 18th Century, the Perahera – highlighted with the decorated and graceful Maligawa Tusker, also have the processions of the three Hindu Devales or shrines that are part of the religious and cultural presence of Kandy, with their own rhythms and rites on show. The Diyawadana Nilame, the Chief of the Maligawa leads the Perahera, and Nilames of the Hindu shrines too participate in this display of colour and performance by the drummers, dancers, and performers of delightful display.

The Hill Country remains the focus in August and in the cool mountainous Nuwara Eliya, the biggest draw is Golf, brought by the English. The Nuwara Eliya Golf Course is a big attraction to lovers of the game, and is one of the finest courses in all of Asia, with its hills, valleys and winding terrain, in a sporting tradition dating back more than two centuries.

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year which falls on the 14th of April and Vesak festival commemorating the Birth, Enlightenment and the Great Demise of the Buddha occurs on the 29th, the full moon day of April. The New Year celebrations are centered around the household and the environs with the whole village participating and goes on for nearly two weeks with much fun and enjoyment. 

Vesak is celebrated by Buddhists mainly in prayer and meritorious acts. The evenings however, come alive with sightseers crowding the streets to view and enjoy Vesak decorations and huge pandals, depicting the life of the Buddha illuminated with thousands of bulbs and jets. 

A glimpse, of the existence worship of gods and cult of spirits and yakkas (evil) which is an integral part of the rural society.

The month of March is a month of expectancy for Sri Lankans,  as the Sinhala and Tamil people eagerly await their New Year 
to dawn on 14th April, On the South coast your eyes may behold an unforgettable sight-the stilt fishermen waiting patiently for their catch seated on stilts. Most of the beaches around the coastline are known nesting grounds for five main turtle species, namely the green, hawksbill, loggerhead, olive ridley and leatherback.

Team Bob on their motor bikes leave Arugambay and head towards Jaffna passing great scenery and several bird sanctuaries, bays and lagoons. The history of the Beira Lake is briefly sketched as plans are ahead to restore and develop it giving prominence to the waterfront as a high end leisure and entertainment zone. Sir Arthur C. Clark was a great lover of Sri Lanka. An interesting read on Pollination of plants.

It is also the height of the tourist season when the flowering trees are in bloom. If you are lucky enough to be in Colombo around 28th Feb/March 1st, you will be able to witness a spectacular Buddhist Pageant, the Navam Perahera a parade of dressed-up elephants, dancers, drummers and saffron robed Buddhist clergy. Even though ‘Team Bob’ biking team couldn’t reach their destination Arugambay across the country, their write-up gives an indication how thrilling Sri Lanka could be if you have the right imagination. Try a visit to the Independence Hall one evening, the ambience is unbelievable with the almost holistic edifice in the background. While in the ancient cities area, in Anuradhapura you will have a chance to at least have a meal at the Sanctuary or Lakeside brimming with character and atmosphere in beautiful surroundings. Food Court Colombo will encourage you to go restaurant hopping tasting the flavor of many authentic dishes, some of course with a twist. Thali’s a must have experience, for lovers of specialty Indian vegetarian food.

Mr. Putin’s noble gesture brought the sword to its rightful resting place-the National Museum, Colombo. An interesting read. An in-depth study of Dambulla, the cave temple complex often compared to Ajantha and Ellore cave in India, displays the largest area of murals in Sri lanka.

Kandy Esela Perahera is held in Kandy for 10 consecutive nights, a spectacle of grandeur, a procession of dancers, drummers and over a 100 caparisoned elephants participating. Kataragama Festival is held in the Hindu shrine at Kataragama, down south with esoteric rituals and religious passion. At the festival of Our Lady Of Madu, the miraculous Catholic shrine around Mannar, the atmosphere is of pure joy and piety.

Welcome to the festival time in Sri Lanka. Two of our grandest festivals occur on the same dates from late July to first week of August. Try to stretch your dates in Sri Lanka, if possible as these are two festivals which you will never forget. 

Kataragama Festival, held in the deep south amidst sylvan surroundings, involving esoteric rituals, customs and traditions will keep you spellbound. The grandest spectacle of the island, the Kandy Esela Perahera (procession) culminates also during the first week of August. You could immerse yourself in the pageantry of medieval splendour.

The Central Bank Currency Museum in the fort, showcase for you, money used in the island, from the earliest times (8th c, A.D.) to date, a veritable treasure trove. Pete Martin, our adventurous cycling enthusiast going around Sri Lanka, unfolds a page from his diary on our mesmerizing south coastal region. Though small in size Sri Lanka is rich in painting dating through the early, classical and medieaval periods, The Dambulla Museum of Paintings, capture these in high quality copies and is easily accessible as the museum is located on the tourist trail.

Mihintale Rock where King Tissa met with Arhant Mahinda, messenger of the great doctrine, is the focus of attention, all lit-up and teeming with white clad devotees.

The ancient treasures found in and around Yala National Park is a profound revelation. Pete Martin, the adventurous cycling enthusiast shares a page from his diary exploring Kotagala to Udawalawe through breathtaking scenery.

Welcome to Sri Lanka in the most hallowed month of May. The Buddhists commemorate three important events, the birth, enlightenment and the passing away of the Buddha on Wesak full moon day. The Ehela trees laden with golden blossoms herald Wesak, which has been declared by the UNO as a Universal Spiritual Holiday. 

An International world conference will be held on 12-14th May, attended by world Buddhist leaders and other international delegates on the theme: Buddhist Teachings for Social Justice and Sustainable World Peace. The venues will be the BMICH and the Dalada Maligawa, Kandy. A wave of Buddhist meditation is sweeping across areas in the U.S.A. as a part of soul therapy for mindfulness based stress reduction.

Sanam Karamally a travel agent from Pakistan, extols the charms of this ‘Paradise Isle’. Pete Martin shares his cycling experience traversing pass the tea gardens and taking a mini break for white water rafting on Kelani river which had been quite an experience!
