Football allows for miracles

Amir Abdou, one of Africa’s most respected coaches, recently visited South Africa to explore the local football landscape and consider new professional opportunities.

With a decorated track record that includes guiding Comoros and Mauritania to historic achievements, Abdou has built a reputation for turning underdogs into formidable competitors. His visit to this country sparked speculation, particularly with the coaching carousel spinning in the PSL. In this wide-ranging interview with Soccer Laduma’s Masebe Qina, Abdou reflects on his coaching journey, his admiration for South African football, and his desire to transition into club coaching after a successful run with national teams. He also shares insights on tactical evolution, working with limited resources, and how he motivates players to reach beyond their perceived limits. Masebe Qina: Coach Abdou, welcome to South Africa. Can you confirm the purpose of your visit?

Amir Abdou: Thank you. First of all, let me say that South Africa is a country I deeply admire. My visit here isn't by chance - it's driven by my affection for this nation. I came to observe some local football and had the opportunity to attend both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates matches, in Johannesburg and Durban respectively. Since concluding my role with the Mauritanian national team, I have developed a strong interest in the South African football scene, particularly the Betway Premiership. The organisation of the league, the infrastructure, and the quality of play are all very impres sive. This visit has given me a close look at the league and the country, and I must say I am truly impressed. If any opportunities were to arise, I would be very open to returning in a professional capacity.

MQ: Jose Riveiro recently left Orlando Pirates, and your presence in the country sparked speculation. Are you in talks with Pirates or any other PSL club?
