President Bola Tinubu’s directive to withdraw police officers from VIP protection is a welcome step toward refocusing law enforcement on its core responsibility: safeguarding the lives and property of all Nigerians. For too long, disproportionate security for the elite has diverted critical resources from communities most affected by crime and insecurity. By redeploying police personnel to underserved areas, the administration has an opportunity to strengthen public trust and address the growing sense of vulnerability among ordinary citizens. Assigning VIP security to the NSCDC, a trained and equipped force, ensures that dignitaries remain protected without undermining broader public safety. Effective implementation of this policy, coupled with strict oversight, could signal a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s security architecture—prioritizing citizen welfare over privilege and reinforcing the principle that security is a public good, not a personal entitlement. This approach, if sustained, can help rebuild confidence in the nation’s security institutions.
