NAFDAC Warns Nigerians Against Widespread Circulation of Unsafe, Unregistered Edible Oils

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert over the growing circulation of substandard and unregistered edible oils across Nigeria.

The warning follows complaints from Lebruni Agro Limited, producers of Liorga soybean and palm kernel oils, whose market surveillance uncovered several adulterated brands, including FINO, PUR, OKI, SUPER DELICIEX, and LA JONIC. These oils are allegedly smuggled into the country and widely distributed in major cities such as Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, Warri, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Lagos, Kano, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Gombe, and others.

NAFDAC noted that the products have no identifiable manufacturers or regulatory approval, making their safety and production processes unverifiable. Consumption of such oils may expose Nigerians to harmful chemicals, impurities, degraded fats, and long-term health risks like cardiovascular disease and liver damage.

The agency urged importers, distributors, retailers, and healthcare providers to remain vigilant and advised consumers to verify product authenticity before purchase.
