Simple ways to ensure you stay well as the temperatures drop and illness runs rampant

HOW TO BEAT winter bugs

When the cooler weather hits, our immune systems instantly become more susceptible to contracting colds and flus. But by taking a few simple, smart actions every day, we can do our bit to keep the bugs at bay. Try these eight ways to stay well this winter...

1 KEEP IT CLEAN

Respiratory viruses live on surfaces like door handles, lift buttons and supermarket trolleys for up to eight hours. All you need to do is contact one of these surfaces, then touch your nose, mouth or eyes and you could get seriously ill. That's why health expert Professor Kerryn Phelps recommends washing hands as often as possible, especially after being in public places and always before eating. For when soap and water aren't available, pop a good-quality antibacterial hand sanitiser in your bag.

2 STEER CLEAR OF SICK PEOPLE

It's better for our health to rug up, stay in and be a little more antisocial during the cooler months. Kerryn says avoiding contact with anyone who is unwell is wise, and to set clear boundaries with friends and family, so they know not to visit if they have a cold or flu. “If your kid is sick, keep them away from preschool or school so that other children don’t have to go through it too,” she advises. “Stay home from work so you don’t spread infection around the office.”
