Australia's best buns

The Australian Women's Weekly

|

April 2026

The Weekly team blind tested six buns from supermarkets and bakeries around Australia to find the best on offer. The criteria Each bun was given a mark out of five for texture, fruit ratio, appearance and taste. So, how did the six buns fare?

Australia's best buns

Coles 3rd place

The glossy glaze won points for appearance, and the texture was fluffy, but the spice level was divisive.

One judge called it “great” and another “underwhelming”. Same for the fruit level. It just goes to show how much personal preference plays into the scoring!

Good for: Hot cross bun traditionalists.

IGA 5th place

This bun surprised the panel as it was texturally closer to a bread roll than hot cross bun, with subtle spice and not a lot of fruit. But this bun would work well as the base for a toasted sandwich, or enjoyed like raisin toast for brekkie.
