AI PCs are reshaping enterprise computing strategy

|April 2026
AI is moving from the cloud to the device. This shift is changing how enterprises think about performance, security, device lifecycle, and IT management. The AI PC is no longer just a faster computer; it is becoming an intelligent computing platform
For years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) lived mostly in the data center and the cloud. That is where the heavy computing happened. That is where AI models were trained and deployed. But that model is now changing. AI is steadily moving toward endpoint devices, and this shift is redefining the role of the personal computer in enterprises. In a conversation with Indrajit Belgundi, Sr. Director and General Manager, Client Solutions Group Business Unit Head, Dell Technologies, that transition came through as more than a hardware refresh. It emerged as a broader platform shift shaped by workload placement, software readiness, security priorities, and long-term device relevance.
The reason is simple. Running AI workloads locally reduces latency, improves privacy, strengthens security, and helps control infrastructure and cloud consumption costs. At the same time, AI models are becoming more efficient and optimized, making it possible for them to run on endpoint devices. This is why the AI PC is now becoming an important part of enterprise IT strategy rather than just another hardware upgrade.
This is not just a hardware transition. It is a platform shift.
The platform architecture is changing
In traditional PCs, the CPU handled most of the workload. In AI PCs, computing is distributed across CPU, GPU, and NPU. Each processor handles a specific type of workload, and together they form an AI-capable platform.
This is why the conversation around AI PCs should not be limited to a single specification like TOPS. Real performance depends on the entire platform: memory, storage, bandwidth, thermals, and software optimization.
Enterprises that evaluate AI PCs only on accelerator performance may miss the bigger picture. The real performance of an AI system depends on how efficiently data moves across the system and how well the hardware and software stack are optimized for AI workloads.
