|July/August 2026
Phil Garner won a World Series as a player and a pennant as a manager in more than four decades in the game.
A Knoxville high school product who attended the University of Tennessee, where he led the NCAA with 12 home runs in 1969, Garner was selected third overall by the Athletics in the January 1971 draft.
An athletic second baseman, Garner climbed to the MLB lineup in 1975 following cups of coffee in 1973 and '74. He made the AL all-star team in 1976, when he stole 35 bases and batted .261/.307/.400 in 159 games.
