A RE-LOOK AT INDIAN MILITARY LOGISTICS & THEATRE COMMANDS
Geopolitics
|April 2026
JOSEPH P CHACKO explains why logistics systems must be integrated to be capable of seamlessly supporting modern warfare operations, which necessitate rapid, coordinated responses across multiple domains
The evolution of military power in the 21st century has made logistics central to strategic thinking. Although traditional metrics of power—such as troop strength, weaponry, and technological sophistication—are still of paramount importance, they are becoming increasingly inadequate when used in isolation. The capacity to maintain operations across domains, terrain, and time is currently the determining factor. Therefore, logistics has not only become a facilitator of combat power but also a determinant of strategic outcomes.
This change has major repercussions for the Indian Armed Forces. India faces a distinctively complex security environment, as it must maintain dominance in the Indian Ocean Region and cope with the possibility of simultaneous or sequential conflict along two active land borders. The geography of these challenges, encompassing high-altitude Himalayan terrain and extensive maritime stretches, places extraordinary demands on the logistics systems.
In this context, India's transition to integrated theatre commands is often considered an organisational reform that is intended to improve jointness. However, this interpretation could potentially underestimate the more profound transformation currently taking place. Theatre commands are essentially logistical structures, in addition to operational ones. In addition to unified command structures, they necessitate shared infrastructure, synchronised resource allocation, and integrated supply chains. Without these, the promise of jointness remains unfulfilled.
