Review calls for overhaul of police leadership

POLICE leadership in England and Wales is not consistently of a high enough standard to deliver the service the public deserves, an independent review has warned.

The Police Leadership Commission, set up with the support of the Home Office, said it found many examples of outstanding police leadership, but overall that the system for identifying, developing and supporting leaders is too weak and fragmented to meet challenges ahead.

The review, led by Lord Blunkett and Lord Herbert of South Downs, calls for a cultural reset after finding more than one in 10 constables and sergeants did not have trust in leadership above them, while more than a fifth of new sergeants and inspectors did not have formal leadership training two years into the job.
