DEVELOPERS DEFEND PLAN BY POINTING TO WORSENING HOUSING SHORTAGE

DEVELOPERS behind controversial plans for 130 homes between Kingswood and Burgh Heath have defended the scheme, arguing the need for housing in the borough is becoming increasingly acute, but the area's MP has warned that the building of homes should not be done at any cost.

The response comes after a wave of opposition, with nearly 700 residents objecting to the outline application for farmland off Canons Lane. Reigate MP Rebecca Paul has also voiced her concerns, claiming the plans would “erode village identity”.

In a right of reply, developer Lightwood said it respected the strength of local feeling, but insisted the debate must be seen in the context of a worsening housing shortage. Figures show more than 1,300 households are currently on the waiting list for social housing in the borough, with only around 150 homes becoming available each year.
