DA has ‘lost moral high ground’ over lobbying claims

Party grapples with state capture claims over interference with GNU ministers

THE DA has lost its moral high ground on clean governance and transparency following allegations by former party leader John Steenhuisen that business interests sought to influence government policy through DA ministers, according to political analyst Zakhele Ndlovu.

Ndlovu, from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, said there is nothing inherently unlawful about businesses lobbying politicians, particularly when companies legally donate to political parties and seek to influence public policy.

However, he said Steenhuisen’s allegations undermine the DA’ long-standing image as a champion of ethical governance.

“I wouldn't be surprised if the DA is captured just like other parties, as the business sector spends a lot of money trying to influence government policy in its favour,” Ndlovu said. “I don't think there is anything illegal, but we can question whether it is ethical for a former DA leader to do what he is accused of doing.”

Steenhuisen recently told News24 that several DA ministers serving in the Government of National Unity (GNU) came under pressure from Resolve Communications, chaired by former DA leader Tony Leon, to meet clients including Elon Musk’s Starlink and recycling company REDISA.
