Home Affairs has made no secret of its intention to eventually replace it with Smart IDs as South Africa moves towards a more secure identity system. Few would argue with that goal. Fraud remains a problem and technology has moved on.
But before government starts talking about the end of the green ID book, it needs to answer a simple question.
