Tory leader says country is 'in limbo' as PM-to-be Burnham fails to answer questions

- BY STEPH SPYRO and JON WALKER

ANDY Burnham's lack of a plan beyond "telling the mayors to sort it out" when he gets to No10 will condemn Britain to a summer of chaos, Kemi Badenoch has warned.

The Prime Minister-in-waiting took no questions after setting out his 10-year vision that included moving power out of Whitehall and creating a No10 North.

But Tory leader Mrs Badenoch cited Labour's lack of political will to cut spending as she said Mr Burnham's devolution drive "isn't going to fix the government's inability to get stuff done".

Writing in the Daily Express she said: "The man who will be Prime Minister in a couple of weeks wants a three-month summer holiday because he needs the time to work out what he thinks. “Giving speeches in Manchester and not taking any questions is simply not good enough.

“Andy Burnham clearly doesn’t have a plan, beyond telling Britain’s mayors to go and sort it out.”

Mr Burnham is expected to become Prime Minister on July 20, days after Parliament breaks for the summer.

He dodged scrutiny of his plans to “rewire” Britain at a speech in Manchester yesterday and, unless he orders MPs ‘back to the Commons, will not face a session of Prime Minister’s Questions until the autumn.

Mrs Badenoch said Britain risks being left in limbo unless there is an urgent show of leadership from the man who is soon likely to be representing the country on the world stage at a time of increasing global tension and economic difficulty.

She said: “Andy Burnham needs to act like a leader, put an end to speculation, name his Cabinet, and come to Parliament and tell the country what he plans to do.”

Former Greater Manchester mayor Mr Burnham yesterday revealed his 10-year plan to transform Britain with the introduction of a Downing Street team based in Manchester to “oversee the biggest rebalancing of power our country has ever seen”.
