ANDY Burnham focused on immigration, the cost of living and reindustrialisation as he set out policy priorities after a win in Makerfield that clears his path to challenge Sir Keir Starmer.

He returns to Westminster with his election as Labour's MP for the constituency, which qualifies him to put himself forward to replace the prime minister in a potential leadership contest.
He said he and his team hoped to “lay out a new path for Britain’, as he spoke at Ashton Town FC in Ashton-in-Makerfield yesterday to mark his victory.
ImmigrationMr Burnham said he had repeatedly heard voters voice concerns about the “unfairness of the immigration system” during the campaign.
